Organic clicks, last six months against the previous period

A maintenance contractor is not in one search market, it is in seven. Air conditioning, plumbing, electrical, painting, handyman, water tank cleaning and renovation each have their own incumbents, their own head terms and their own intent. Working them as seven jobs rather than one took the top-ten set from 30 keywords to 79 in a quarter, and organic clicks up 151% across six months — but the number that matters to the business is the 155 to 185 enquiries a month arriving organically, most of them on WhatsApp.

The problem

The site sold seven trades from one thin set of pages, which meant it competed properly in none of them. "AC repair dubai" at 6,600 searches a month, "painting services dubai" at 5,400, "plumber" at 5,400, "electrician" at 5,400 — each of those is a separate market with a separate leader, and a single services page cannot answer any of them well.

The competitive read was more useful than the volume. Seven rivals were tracked across 384 keyword placements, and the two largest tell opposite stories: the category leader holds 116 keywords and draws around 8,600 visits a month, while another rival holds 159 keywords — more coverage — and draws about 2,900. Ranking for more things is not the same as ranking for the right things.

What we did

Every trade got its own page set, mapped to its own keyword group rather than sharing one. The keyword map was built by service category first — air conditioning, painting, electrical, plumbing, handyman, water tank cleaning, annual contracts — so each page had one market to win and a short list of terms that defined it.

Then the clusters were split by intent inside each trade. "Water tank cleaning" is a commercial service page; "seasonal home maintenance" at 3,500 searches a month is an article that will never convert directly but feeds the service pages beneath it. Sorting commercial from informational before writing is what stops a maintenance site publishing blog posts where it needed service pages.

A hundred and seven of the 155 organic enquiries in one month arrived as a WhatsApp click. Twenty came through the contact form.

SEO strategy for a multi-trade maintenance company

The mistake in home services is treating the company as the unit of competition. The unit is the trade, and a contractor selling seven of them is running seven campaigns that happen to share a domain.

  1. 01Map keywords by trade before anything elseAir conditioning, painting, electrical, plumbing, handyman, water tank cleaning, annual contracts. Each group gets its own pages and its own head term, because each has a different incumbent to displace.
  2. 02Judge rivals on traffic, not coverageThe rival with the most ranking keywords in this category draws a third of the traffic of the rival with fewer. Copying a competitor’s keyword list without checking what it earns copies their inefficiency.
  3. 03Separate the service page from the article"Water tank cleaning dubai" is a page that takes a booking. "Seasonal home maintenance" at 3,500 a month is an article that feeds it. Deciding which is which before writing is most of the work.
  4. 04Chase the unqualified term as well as the city one"Condenser ac", "plumbing work", "coil cleaning ac" carry real volume without a city attached, and they were sitting unranked while the Dubai variants ranked.
  5. 05Expect the movement in the mid-table firstThe visible jump here was positions 11–20 filling out and the top ten nearly doubling. Head terms follow that; they do not lead it.

The enquiries arrive on WhatsApp, not the contact form

One reporting month produced 155 organic enquiries: 107 WhatsApp clicks, 28 phone calls and 20 form submissions. Sixty-nine per cent came through WhatsApp and thirteen per cent through the form most agencies spend their time optimising. In this market, on this kind of urgent job, a contact form is the channel people use last — which changes what a service page should put above the fold, and changes what you count as a conversion.

The competitor number worth stealing

Across the seven rivals tracked, one holds 159 ranking keywords and draws roughly 2,900 visits a month. Another holds 116 and draws roughly 8,600. Three times the traffic from a quarter fewer keywords, because the second one owns the terms people actually book from — "ac repair dubai" at 6,600 a month, "painting services dubai" at 5,400 — while the first has spread itself across long-tail nobody searches. When a competitor audit hands you a keyword list, the useful column is estimated traffic, not count.

What the engagement contained

The work was mostly mapping and structure. In a category this fragmented, deciding what goes where is the intervention.

  • Seven competitors analysed across 384 keyword placements, scored on estimated traffic rather than keyword count
  • 144 keywords mapped to a service category before any page was written
  • Topical clusters split commercial from informational inside every trade
  • A page per trade rather than a shared services page, each with its own head term
  • Annual maintenance contract content built as its own group, for planning-stage rather than emergency searches
  • Ranking tracked month over month so movement could be read per trade, not as one line

How it unfolded

  1. Research

    Seven markets, not one

Competitors analysed by estimated traffic, and the keyword set split by trade before any structure was proposed.

  2. Structure

    A page per trade

Service pages built per category with their own head terms, and clusters divided commercial from informational.

  3. November

    The baseline

164 ranking keywords, 30 of them in the top ten, twelve in the top three and no AI Overview anywhere.

  4. December, January

    Enquiries before rankings

Clicks up 7.9% then 16% month on month, and 155 then 185 organic enquiries — most of them arriving on WhatsApp.

  5. February

    The quarter lands

266 ranking keywords, 79 in the top ten, 31 in the top three and eight AI Overviews held.

  6. The month after

    A dip, with a cause

Clicks fell from 723 to 661 on a mix of lower navigational search and Core Web Vitals failures. The development team worked through the performance issues; impressions kept climbing to 65.5K throughout.

Engagement note

Figures come from the client’s own monthly reports — Search Console compares, the quarter-over-quarter keyword brackets, the six-month ranking report and the enquiry events split by channel. The account has not moved in a straight line: the month after the quarter shown here, clicks fell from 723 to 661 on a combination of reduced navigational search and Core Web Vitals failures on the site. That is included above rather than left out, and the performance work that followed is the reason it was a dip rather than a trend.

The verdict

Seven trades is seven campaigns. Mapping them apart, judging rivals on what their keywords earn rather than how many they hold, and counting the WhatsApp click as the conversion it actually is — that combination doubled the top ten in a quarter and put 155 enquiries a month through the door organically.

The part we don’t publish

A case study shows the outcome. The method behind it — the keyword architecture, the competitor gaps we exploited, what is working in your niche right now — is the part that is actually worth your time. Book a demo and we will open the live website and walk you through all of it.

No pitch deck, no commitment — a working session on your site and ours.
