Reddit goes logged-in only after Google AI Mode cut its search traffic: what the login wall means for your brand’s AI visibility
Reddit is going logged-in only after Google AI Mode cut its search referrals by over 1 million a week. What the login wall means for brand AI visibility.

Key takeaways
- Reddit is becoming a “primarily logged-in experience”. CEO Steve Huffman announced it on 29 October 2026, the same day as Q3 results. Tests start in select markets outside the United States in Q4 2026, and the results will shape a global logged-in-only Reddit. The front page, shared posts and pages reached from search are meant to stay viewable.
- The trigger is Google. Reddit’s shareholder letter says search referral traffic fell “meaningfully” in Q3 and dropped by more than 1 million referrals a week on average in October. Huffman told analysts that AI Overviews and AI Mode are the main cause, and that “AI Mode does not drive traffic. Not for us, and not to anybody as far as I know.”
- Reddit’s shares fell 29.2% on 30 October 2026, even though revenue grew 53% to $895 million. If the referral decline continues, Reddit says total daily users could fall by a low-double-digit percentage in Q4 from a base of 130 million.
- For brands, two things change. Reddit threads still feed AI answers (Ahrefs ranks reddit.com the second most-cited domain in ChatGPT in November 2026, at 6.2% of citations), but the clicks those threads used to send are drying up, and Reddit’s COO says the company is “pretty skeptical of GEO”. Reddit remains a place to earn genuine mentions, not a shortcut into AI answers.
- The fix is to measure how much of your AI visibility rests on Reddit, diversify the sources that AI engines cite for your category, and treat Reddit as a community and paid channel rather than a free route into Google and ChatGPT.
Is Reddit really going logged-in only?
Yes, and it is coming from the top. On 29 October 2026, a few hours before Reddit’s third-quarter earnings call, co-founder and CEO Steve Huffman published a post on his own profile titled “About that login screen”. In it he wrote that “we’re going to evolve Reddit to being a primarily logged-in experience”, calling it “a big change for Reddit, where we’ve allowed logged-out access to basically all of Reddit for the last two decades”. He gave four reasons: personalisation, a better ads business, safety regulation, and protecting Reddit’s data. We quote the post from PPC Land’s full report of it.
The Q3 2026 letter to shareholders, filed with the SEC the same day, puts a timetable on it: “In Q4 we’ll begin fully testing this in select markets outside the U.S. The results of those tests will inform an optimized version of logged-in-only Reddit globally.” On the call, Huffman was blunter still: “This is a test, but we are going to make this transition.” He also conceded the trade: “We’ll likely be trading reach for engagement.”
What stays open matters for any brand discussed on Reddit. Huffman’s post says “the front page being available logged-out is useful and important”, and that Reddit wants “visitors arriving from search or other external sources to see the content that’s being linked to”. Asked in the thread whether one-off visitors would hit a wall, he said Reddit will “have to test and find the right balance”, according to Android Authority. The boundary is not fixed yet; that is what the Q4 tests are for.
- 8–17 Aug 2026Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations collapsesPromptwatch data relayed by Semrush: a steady 3.8% share from 18 July to 7 August falls to an average of 0.5% between 14 and 17 August, an 86% decline. OpenAI said it does not set a fixed level of visibility for any site.
- 26 Oct 2026AI Overviews on over 80% of Google searchesSearch Engine Roundtable collates Semrush, SE Ranking and seoClarity data: up from about 50% in June 2025 and about 15% the year before.
- 29 Oct 2026Huffman’s “About that login screen” post and Q3 resultsSearch referrals down by more than 1 million a week on average in October. Logged-in-only tests to start in Q4 outside the US. Revenue $895 million, up 53%.
- 29 Oct 2026The earnings call: “AI Mode does not drive traffic”Huffman names AI Overviews and AI Mode as the biggest part of Reddit’s hypothesis, plus lower rankings for its machine-translated pages outside the US. COO Jen Wong: “we are pretty skeptical of GEO”.
- 30 Oct 2026Shares fall 29.2%From a close of $129.60 on 29 October to $91.73 at 4 pm EDT on 30 October, per TheStreet.

- 3 Nov 2026Ahrefs: reddit.com still second most-cited domain in ChatGPTNovember 2026 Brand Radar data, US queries: 6.2% of citations, behind Wikipedia at 10.1%, with Reddit’s citation count down 32%.
Why is Reddit losing Google traffic?
Reddit’s own account puts numbers and a cause on the record in a regulated filing. The shareholder letter says: “Our search referral traffic was down meaningfully in Q3, with the decline accelerating later in the quarter. The biggest impact was on logged-out and web traffic, but some of the impact flows through to logged-in and App traffic.” It adds that “during October, we have seen that search traffic has dropped by more than 1 million referrals on average per week”.
On the call, transcribed by Investing.com, Huffman set out a two-part hypothesis. “The biggest one is the AI Overviews or AI Mode… What started as a feature is now the full search experience, and at the minimum, it pushes everyone down the search page. Then on top of that, the experiences themselves are not traffic drivers.” The second: “we believe our machine translation content is also being ranked lower. This primarily would affect us outside the U.S.” He separated this from a routine algorithm change, noted that “Google is crawling us as hard as ever”, and said: “People still want Reddit. It is just Google is not sending them to Reddit the way they used to.”
“The reality is the AI Mode does not drive traffic. Not for us, and not to anybody as far as I know. That’s just a fundamental shift in how Google works. It used to be a traffic driver, now it’s not.”
Google’s executives described the direction of travel on Alphabet’s Q3 call two days earlier. Marie Haynes reproduces the lines: Sundar Pichai said “We are building one seamless experience across AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Traditional Search”. The week’s other Google changes fit. On 2 November, Search Engine Roundtable reported that AI Overviews for many brand-related keywords have moved into the right-hand column where the knowledge panel used to sit, and Google’s Gary Illyes implied that click and query data are not coming to the Search Console AI performance report soon: “we don’t have anything to announce yet.” We covered the opt-out side in Should you opt out of Google AI Overviews?.

Read the chart with the letter’s other line in mind: logged-in and app users “make up the vast majority of engagement, and over 80% of the monetization on Reddit”. Logged-out visitors are 59% of daily users and under 20% of the money. That is the arithmetic behind the login wall. Huffman told CNBC: “The vast majority of our revenue comes from our app users and logged-in users are direct traffic, and both of those are up Q. over Q. and so that’s where our focus is.”
The market priced the audience trend, not the revenue. Reddit beat on revenue ($895 million against the $878 million consensus CNBC reported) but guided Q4 revenue to $1.0 billion to $1.03 billion, below the $1.05 billion expected, and warned that “total DAUqs could fall in Q4, by a low-double-digit percentage from our current base of 130 million DAUqs” if the decline continues. TheStreet’s figures: a close of $129.60 on 29 October and $91.73 at 4 pm EDT on 30 October, a 29.2% fall.

Ahrefs estimates pulled on 29 October 2026 and reported by Foundation. Ahrefs models traffic from rankings and search volume, so it may understate clicks lost to AI Overviews. October 2026 is 22% below October 2025.

Third-party estimates point the same way. Foundation’s Ethan Crump pulled Ahrefs data on 30 October showing Reddit at 763 million global visits a month, down 13% in three months and 26% in a year. These are modelled estimates, not Reddit’s logs, but they match the direction Reddit disclosed.
Will Reddit threads still show up in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT?
For now, yes, and heavily. The twist is that citations and clicks have come apart. Ahrefs’ November 2026 ranking of the most-cited domains in ChatGPT, from Brand Radar’s US index, puts reddit.com second at 6.2% of citations, behind Wikipedia at 10.1%, with Reddit’s citation count down 32%. Foundation’s pull of Ahrefs data on 30 October found 43.8 million AI responses citing reddit.com, up 62% from 27 million a year earlier, while Reddit’s estimated organic traffic fell 26%. Google AI Overviews carried most of that volume at 32.9 million responses; over three months, AI Mode citations of Reddit fell 49% and ChatGPT’s fell 86%, while Perplexity’s doubled to 4.2 million.
ChatGPT’s drop has a history. Semrush reported in August that Promptwatch saw Reddit’s share of ChatGPT Search citations fall from a steady 3.8% (18 July to 7 August 2026) to 0.5% between 14 and 17 August, an 86% decline. Promptwatch called the figure provisional, and OpenAI told Yahoo Tech it does not set a fixed level of visibility for any site. Licensing shapes citations too: Ahrefs’ analysis of OpenAI’s publisher partnerships found partner sites went from 7.5% of ChatGPT citations in March 2026 to 12.5% in late September. Reddit’s OpenAI deal stands; its Google deal is in “active discussions”, with options that “potentially include not doing a deal”.
| What is changing | Who it hits | What to check now |
|---|---|---|
| Login prompts in test markets outside the US from Q4 2026; boundary between logged-in and logged-out still being tested | Brands whose support, reviews or comparisons live in subreddit threads; international businesses first | Open your top-cited Reddit threads logged out from a test-market IP once tests begin; note which still render |
| Google AI Overviews and AI Mode answer the query on the page instead of sending the click | Anyone counting on Reddit as a side door to Google traffic (ranking your brand’s thread rather than your page) | Search Console: clicks from queries where a Reddit thread outranked you; the AI performance report shows impressions only |
| ChatGPT citing Reddit far less since August; Perplexity citing it more | Brands tracking “share of AI answers” mainly through Reddit mentions | Baseline Reddit’s share of your citations engine by engine; watch for engine-specific swings |

What did Reddit mean by “we are pretty skeptical of GEO”?
The line came from COO Jen Wong, answering Citizens analyst Andrew Boone, who asked whether advertisers want to “show up in LLMs” by being on Reddit. Her answer: brands should come to Reddit “for the engaged audience and to get competitive outcomes to grow your business”, and generative engine optimisation “is not in our partnerships today. It is not a core piece of what we do with our advertising partners today.”
“I think there has been this idea of GEO or kind of organic, et cetera, and I will just say, and we have been very open about this with our partners, we are pretty skeptical of GEO. Reddit itself is pretty inoculated to manipulation, I would say.”
Both readings are probably right. Reddit will not sell “get into the AI corpus” as a product, because its value to advertisers is measured outcomes from a logged-in audience. And it does not want its threads gamed, because that would make engines and users trust it less. Wong also told analysts that “half of U.S. shoppers say they come to Reddit to verify AI recommendations”. That is the frame for a brand: Reddit is where people check whether an AI answer was right. Being well regarded in those threads matters more than being mentioned in them. Our answer engine optimisation service is built on that distinction.
What practitioners are seeing
The practitioner view this week separates two things Reddit marketers used to treat as one: being cited, and being clicked.
“Reddit threads are still getting cited heavily in Google AI Overviews, AI Mode, and Perplexity, but the clicks are drying up.”
“I think new opportunities are arising, but also much of the way we have traditionally been able to make money from Search is disappearing.”
Reddit’s chief communications officer Adam Collins told Semrush in August: “For communicators, Reddit’s value is in the real conversations that people are having about your brand today, not where it surfaces tomorrow.” On the user side, the reaction to Huffman’s post was mostly hostile, as Android Authority and PPC Land report from the thread: readers worried Reddit would become “like X or Pinterest”, and one asked whether the wall would “push people towards the AI answers from the bots”. Anecdotal, but it names the risk: if the thread is behind a wall, the AI summary becomes the destination.
What to do now if your brand depends on Reddit for visibility
None of this means leaving Reddit. It means no longer treating Reddit as a free route into Google and AI answers. In order:
- Baseline Reddit’s share of your AI citations, engine by engine. Run your 30 to 50 money prompts in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity and log every cited URL. If a third or more in any engine are Reddit threads, that engine’s view of you is one policy change from a reset, as August’s ChatGPT drop showed.
- Find the queries where a Reddit thread outranks your own page. In Search Console, compare non-brand clicks over 16 weeks. Where a Reddit thread sits above you, write or rebuild the page so the answer lives on your domain with the candour the thread had. Our content service does this mapping.
- Make your own pages the better source. AI engines cite pages that answer plainly, show evidence and carry a named author. Publish comparisons, pricing, limitations and support answers with structured data, so an engine that stops citing Reddit has somewhere to go. That is technical SEO and editorial work.
- Earn the thread; never seed it. Reddit says it is “pretty inoculated to manipulation”. Participate with disclosed brand or employee accounts in subreddits where your customers already are, and accept criticism there. Genuine threads are what AI engines keep.
- Check your branded subreddit’s front door. Confirm what a logged-out visitor sees today, then re-check from a test market once the Q4 tests begin. Mirror pinned posts, wiki pages and FAQ threads on your site.
- Run Reddit paid and organic as one programme. Reddit is telling advertisers that logged-in, personalised reach is the product. Test Reddit Ads against the organic visits you are losing from search, judged on engaged visits and assisted conversions.
- Diversify the sources AI engines cite for your category. Trade press, review sites, YouTube, LinkedIn and industry bodies all appear in citation lists. Our AI referral traffic analysis shows how little of this shows up as clicks, so measure presence, not sessions.
How to measure the impact
Reddit will keep reporting logged-in and logged-out daily uniques by geography, CFO Drew Vollero confirmed, so the next hard data point is its Q4 report. Your own measurement should not wait. Track monthly: the share of your AI citations that are Reddit URLs, per engine; organic clicks on queries where Reddit threads outrank you; and reddit.com referrals in analytics, which the tests will change first outside the US. Google gives no click data for AI Overviews or AI Mode, so treat AI visibility as a presence metric alongside Search Console impressions. Digidot’s reporting service reads the two stories, cited and clicked, together.
The larger lesson is the one Huffman gave CNBC: “that relationship between Google and the rest of the internet is evolving”. Reddit, which had unusually good terms in it, has decided to stop depending on it. Smaller sites should draw the same conclusion without a login wall: own the answer, earn the mention, and measure what AI engines say about you rather than counting clicks they no longer send. Our SEO service starts from that premise.
Frequently asked questions
Is Reddit going to require a login to read posts?
Reddit says it is moving to a “primarily logged-in experience”. CEO Steve Huffman announced it on 29 October 2026, and the Q3 shareholder letter says tests begin in select markets outside the United States in Q4 2026, with results informing a global version. Huffman has said the front page, shared posts and pages reached from search should remain viewable, but the exact boundary is still being tested.
Why is Reddit losing Google search traffic?
Reddit’s shareholder letter says search referrals fell meaningfully in Q3 2026 and dropped by more than 1 million a week on average in October. On the earnings call, Huffman blamed Google’s AI Overviews and AI Mode, which answer queries on the page and, in his words, “do not drive traffic”, plus lower rankings for Reddit’s machine-translated pages outside the US. He said Google is still crawling Reddit as hard as ever.
Will Reddit posts still appear in Google AI Overviews and ChatGPT after the login wall?
For now they do. Ahrefs’ November 2026 data ranks reddit.com the second most-cited domain in ChatGPT at 6.2% of citations, and Google AI Overviews account for most of the AI responses that cite Reddit. Whether that continues depends on how Reddit treats crawlers and licensed partners under the new policy. Reddit has deals with OpenAI and Google, and Huffman said the Google deal is in active discussions.
What did Reddit mean when it said it is “skeptical of GEO”?
COO Jen Wong told analysts that brands should advertise on Reddit for its engaged audience and measurable outcomes, not to get into AI training data or AI answers. She said Reddit is “pretty skeptical of GEO” and “pretty inoculated to manipulation”, and that generative engine optimisation is not part of its advertising partnerships. In practice, seeded or gamed threads are the thing Reddit is signalling it will not support.
Should my business still post on Reddit for AI visibility?
Yes, but as a community channel, not a shortcut. Genuine, disclosed participation in subreddits where your customers are still produces the threads AI engines cite and the conversations shoppers use to verify AI recommendations. What no longer works is relying on Reddit for the clicks, or treating Reddit mentions as the whole of your AI visibility. Build the same answers on your own site and diversify the sources that cite you.
How do I know how much of my AI visibility comes from Reddit?
Run your most important prompts in ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini and Perplexity each month and record every cited URL. The share that is reddit.com is your exposure, engine by engine. Pair it with Search Console data on the non-brand queries where a Reddit thread outranks your page, and with reddit.com referrals in analytics, which the login tests will affect first outside the US.
